Our wedding is in September 2011, and we are planning a casual, rustic, green (earth friendly not the color:) wedding. The colors we want to incorporate are yellows, blues, and white. I have planned on making my own centerpieces and getting my flowers from a u-pick nursery. But I'm contemplating on scrapping that and doing a potted flower as a centerpiece instead. My thought process in changing my original plan is that cutting flowers for just one day isn't staying true to my green goal, but I really want to incorporate flowers into my centerpieces. The other positives are that they could also be given away as favors and I think it would lower my flower/centerpiece cost significantly.  The negative is I don't have access to a garden so I would need to buy said flowers and keep them alive (which I'm kind of nervous about.
I would love any and all advice:)
Thanks in advance!

I think that would be a good idea. As you said you just have to keep them alive and looking vibrant for the big day. Maybe do a test run with flowers in season now and see how they look after a certain amount of time.

I'm planning on doing potted flowers as well!  I think it's a great idea.  I think it would help to talk to a local nursery and see if you can order flowers for a certain date, that way you won't have to keep them alive for too long.

Good luck!

Good idea with talking to a Nursery. I'll get right on that, time is a tickin:)

We got married last year in September and used potted flowers for our centerpieces.  We just went down to the local nursery and picked them all up a week or so before the wedding and repotted them at home.  It was seriously little to no effort at all, and the grand total for flowers for the entire wedding was $135.

Asters, mums and pansies are in season in September (at least here in MD).  We had some really pretty yellow mums and blue asters for our CPs.

Yep, definitely check with your local nursery/farmer.  We are doing the same thing.  They will plant them in time for you!

I considered growing my own centerpieces ladies, but bagged that idea and here's why. I have a green thumb, but didn't feel confident that they'd come out right and I'd have to punt anyway.  My flowers are tulips and ranunculous, which are both fine for late April (my date is 4/21/12), but timing is important with bulbs and I didn't want to risk it.

I live in Baltimore and I found an EXCELLENT florist who sources all of her flowers locally (within 90 minutes drive of Baltimore). Local Color Florist http://www.locoflo.com/. Ellen Frost ist the owner and it was reasonably priced. You may want to check it out.
